Advertsing placement

Advertising placement / Product placement

Find products which I think teenagers are likely to consume and explain why you include them or exclude them from your documentary.

I think teenagers would use alcohol – Glens vodka – as they would be committing crimes and would most probably be under the influence of substances.

I also thing they would wear Lonsdale tracksuit bottoms, these are small brands unlike Adidas and Nike much bigger which are household names.
I also recognise that should this film be shown on a public broadcasting channel, this means I will refrain from using any brand within the text.

I chose these brands because they are more affordable as they are more affordable to buy rather than the larger brands and this way I can save costs.

box office figures

Banstead statistics

box office/ figures

Article on The nation price of cinema tickets, showing how the local cinema is the most expensive cinema in surrey. Although this is the case, there are over 16% of children in poverty, which somehow is not right due to the fact that the cinemas in which are closest to these children are the most expensive.

This shows the amount of those in the surrey county who visit the cinema regularly and how often.

Evidence is displayed below:

This image shows the percentage of poverty in the in Preston region

Preston Ward - Banstead
35% of Preston ward in Tadworth, Banstead Surrey, are living in social housing which is twice as much as the amount of families in the whole of England, which is around 17%.

Preston holds 26% of children under 16 living in poverty, which the highest percentage of children in banstead.

Responses to new coverage

Responses to news coverage

Below we can see screen shots from the Reigate and Banstead Beat (Surrey Police) Facebook page which shows news updates and coverage from any crime or warnings within the local area. The Facebook page is available for the public to comment and view all that is posted on the page.

The police have images of each other as their header as we can see and their badge on display to show their authenticity.

However, despite the seriousness of the page and what it is for also it belonging to the police and it being a community page - the seriousness doesn't linger all that much once you get reading the page.

Here we can see what appears to be candid shots of the police and community officers and that gives off a non professional look to the page. The pictures are not white backgrounds nor are they all looking into the camera and this makes the page look lazy and casual.

Here we can see an image of the police car and the caption of the picture which looks like a humorous joke the police are playing on the page to create a somewhat lighthearted mood. however this may cause other teenagers to potentially react the same way as these officers, but for it to have a backfiring affect. the affect may be the teenagers belonging to some of the parents on this site seeing this page and the light-hearted nature of it and subconsciously they may think that the police are nit very serious, the police don't really do anything or that the police are alright, they'll probably joke about it or let me off.
However this is very much not the case and will mis guide certain teenagers/ individuals of the Banstead community in making them believe or have the assumption of committing a crime of whatever form and extent - and somehow being able to get let off the hook due to the lack of discipline and seriousness to the page.

if tehre are any mothers whom visit this page or actively comments, they may also be the ones who lack the seriousness in them to inform their children about the seriousness of crime, despite the fact if we relate back to the survey which i had conducted on teenagers and their opinions of Banstead and some stating that the crime is disguised - they still must be informed and be educated on crime and just how unacceptable it is.

attitudes to media products

Create your own user feedback survey

The survey which i conducted above shows the attitudes to media products which i have chosen to be video games and the genres. we can see the the number of people in total selected war games or adventure/action games to be their favourite. this may have an impact on teenagers mindsets withing the Banstead community and how they seek their thrills. it could be a good indication on how educated they are on crime and the truth behind the disguised teenage criminals of Banstead.

Summary

Summary

From the data which i have gathered, i have been able to conclude that

what have i learnt from my findings?

how will this help me in the production of my documentary?

what happens now?

Fivestar will start the production of the documentary with the help that i gave managed to receive from teachers, peers and my initiative, my documentary will be complete within a short matter of time.

Placement

Placement

Webcast is probably the best way to distribute Fivestar's documentary because of my target audience. For example, my target audience is 14-18 year old's and they watch stuff online more that actual television. This is effective because I will not waste money on the cost to distribute to TV. The cost of producing a professional webcast can cost anywhere between £5000-£7000, this is significantly cheaper than distributing it on TV. This is better than the other ways because it is one of the cheapest options and one of the most effective because most of my target audience watch TV online rather than on TV, which means the form of webcast which i could use is a Vlog, via YouTube, Vimeo, Vadio, Vevo etc.

This is significantly better than distributing on TV because it is cheaper and more effective. For example, it averagely costs around £5000-£7000. Where as, it costs anywhere up to £50,000 to distribute it on TV. Webcasts are better for Fivestar because most of their target audience watch TV on the internet rather than actual TV. This is effective because it is not only cheaper but will increase their profit.

Viability

Viability

My documentary is financially viable because their is not many expenses I have to worry about. For example, with the distribution the cost of putting my documentary on TV can cost anywhere up to £750,000 and that is not financially viable. However, the cost of uploading my video to YouTube is free and this is financially viable because I am on a very tight budget.

I have the necessary skills for the production. For example, the equipment in the school I have available to me in the school are cameras and post-production equipment. The cameras are useful because they are at a good standard and I am familiar with them. This is effective because I will not waste time learning to use another camera. The post-production equipment is useful because they are of a high quality and I know how to use them already. This is also useful because equipment like this can cost somewhere in the thousands. However, it is available to me for free as I am a student.

I have some skills in editing with the mac books that we have located in are school. This is useful because I will not have to waste time learning about how to edit my documentary. However, when it comes to the AVID systems we have in the school, I may have to ask an A-Level student or a member of staff how to use the editing system then this will become viable.

The most important part I will need help with is the post-production stage because I am quite inexperienced with using it. For example, I do not know how to add cuts into my documentary with the AVID system. This is effective because I will waste time not knowing what I am doing. This problem can be solved by asking a more experienced sixth former who has used this equipment several times. This is effective because it will save time and still make my project still viable.

Overall, I think that I do have time to produce the product because when it comes down to it, it will averagely take 5 days to film as-well as 5 days to edit. This is effective because it will take ten days to produce which is really quick for documentaries.

What help and support will you require?
I have been using iMovie more than I have on the AVID, giving me the option to stick to what I am familiar with or to try a brand-new software I have never encountered. However, practising on the AVID will give me an insight of the professional world. Meaning that I will need support from an 13yr student or from a member of staff who knows how to use the AVID media composer.
Despite the fact that, greater part of the production role I can fill without anyone else's input yet when it comes down to talent and sound recordist/make up I will require assistance. This is efficient as I will be able to save money and time by doing this.
Have you got enough time to produce the product?

In conclusion, I believe that it would take approximately 5 days to produce the product and the same amount of days to edit. Giving me 10 days in total to produce which is quite short but effective.  I done a great deal of research finding the best area and the perfect individuals to report about. I may be able to spare time which would me to enhance my work and perhaps add few more details till it reaches to complete my vision.

production research

Resources and Costs
These include: Personnel, Talent, Finance, Suppliers, Facilities, Locations and Logistical Support.

Personnel/Crew:
The website I found said it can supply me with a 2-man camera crew. This includes a HD camera operator and a experienced sound recorder with his own equipment for the total cost of £505. This is effective for making my short film documentary because I am on a tight budget and I need to save money where I can and this is a relatively cheap crew.

Talent:
The website I used supplied me with a multiple choice of actors. For the voice over of my documentary I Selected Tommie G. He has 7 stars and a 100% like rating and the best bit he costs only £26 a hour. This is effective for my short film because I am on a tight budget, so I need to cut costs where I can.

Finance:
The research I conducted concluded that the cheapest I could make a documentary was £600 a minute. However, this is still way out of my price range so I am going to have to make serious cut backs. This is effective because it means that I am working under the cheapest budget recommended.

Suppliers:
The camera I would most likely use is the Sony PMW-300 Camera Hire, it costs £115 a day, it also comes with a tripod free of charge. The total cost of the 5-days will be £575.  The sound recorder I would use is a Sennheiser MKH-416 Boom Microphone and housing and this costs £23 a day, so the cost of using it for 5-days will be £115. This is effective because I am over the £600 recorded budget so I will need to make cuts.

Facilities:
The I am filming in is The Beacon School. The facilities this location has is a fully accessible media suite which includes editing equipment (AVID Software) and camera gear. This is effective because as a student movie I have very little finances, so I need to make savings. This area also includes a countless number of teenagers and as I am making a documentary about teenage crime this links hand in hand.

Location:

The location I will mostly be filming is the Skate Ramps by Piquets Way. The reason I chose this location is because it is rumored to be where most teenagers with a criminal record hang out with their friends. This is effective because my documentary is about teenage crime in Banstead.

Logistical Support:
The company I looked at said they will supply decent arrivals, arrange transportation, arranage housing and they guarantee client safety. This is effective because they offer helpful services and I could use them to transport my equipment safely.

Survey analysis - teenagers and crime in Banstead

My survey on teenagers in Banstead and its crime rate

Below are some of the questions that i asked when i was conducting my research on Banstead interview. They show the responses and the percentage of people whom answered what to which questions.

This first question here shows individuals responses to them thinking that Banstead is a lovely area, despite it being middle town it is usually always emphasised to be a upper class and clean area for semi wealthy people to shop in the exclusive range of boutiques which they have in the high street.
50% of the individuals answered to believing that Bansetad is a middle class town which would also suggest that they have a low crime rate and the area is regarded fairly safe.

50% of those whom answered the survey believe that the town manages to disguise the crime which happens within it. This may also be a good reason why the first question was answered fairly positively and this is because it is portrayed as a middle - upper class town, you would be none the wiser to any crime or dangerous situations that happen in Banstead.

80% of the participants in this survey stated that there are not enough activities for teenagers to engage in within the Banstead community. This may have the loitering effect on teenagers as in their free time they have nothing else to do but go out, meet their friends and get up to mischievous situations. This could also be why teenagers go around terrorising and causing trouble in the area due to their lack of activities which leads them being drowned in boredom.

60% of the participants of this survey admitted that they do not have a part time job and this may be the reading why teenagers go around stealing behaving recklessly. The fact that they do not have a job indicates that their behaviour may turn greedy and disrespectful towards things that they do not own and that they do not have in their possession. Also the fact that they do not have a part time job will be the reason why they have a lot of free time, doing nothing productive at times like the weekends or half term holidays which means that they have plenty of time to  be seeking that thrill that they're looking for or exploring new places and experiences new things whether they be dangerous or not.
The fact that they do not have a job disguises the acknowledgement of real hard work. they are unable to understand the true meaning of a days work and that money is not an unlimited source but if you want it you have to work for it or in some cases earn if it it may be a gift from parents etc. and this shows their lack of discipline and their immature mindset which they think is smart and sneaky.

Questionnairs

Analysed Questionnaires

The first question that i asked my volunteers was
“Do you know anyone under the age of 18 with a criminal conviction?
60% said yes. This is effective because over half of the teenagers in Banstead i asked said yes, I concluded from this that this may be reliable evidence to go by as they have to know the individual with a criminal conviction and considering 60% answered yes, that is a fair amount of convictions for a medium sized group of people as not everyone knows someone who had been tried and convicted of a crime. This is useful for the documentary because the initial response that you would get from people on their opinions of Banstead would all be fairly positive and to hear someone say a negative thing would be quite peculiar and questionable.

The second question I asked my audience was
 “Have you ever been arrested?”
30% answered yes that's a very high percentage due to the fact all of my audience said they were under 18 and often youths under the age of 18 are seen somewhat troubled or lack a sense of education due to their criminalistic behaviours. The third question ties in with this question because it asks weather or not getting arrested led to a criminal conviction. Out of the 3 people that said yes 2 of them said it lead to a criminal conviction. This is effective because this data supports the idea of the rising youth crime statistic. This is useful for the documentary because it shows that the future of Banstead may be a crime led one.

The fourth question I asked my audience was
“Have you ever taken any drugs?”
50% of my audience answered yes. This data is useful because over 40% of the people who answered yes also said yes to being arrested. This links crime and drugs together. This is useful for the documentary because it supports the theory of drug abuse rising with teenagers in the UK.

The fifth question I asked my audience was
“Do you think that video games have anything to with the rising youth offending statistic?”
Only 30% of my audience said yes this is surprising because i thought it would be higher. The sixth question I asked was "If you were offered drugs for free at a party, would you take them?" 70% of my audience answered yes to this question. This is effective because 100% of them answered yes to taking drugs previously. This supports the idea that teenagers become addicted to drugs after taking them once.

The final question I asked was
"Would you consider Banstead a crime hot spot?"
Over 80% of the people said no. This is effective because it contradicts the idea that the youth crime is rising in the UK. as well as within Bnastead town. The final question I asked was would you be willing to conduct an interview. 80% said no however the 20% which agreed left me with the choice of an interviewee to conduct an inter on teenage crime in Banstead.

Product preferences survey - audience research

Create your own user feedback survey

Here is a survey which i produced which outlines the different game genres and allows the audience to select their favourite games and which genre is their favourite and why.

I think that this was a useful way for to find out the potential mindsets for teenagers in Banstead because this way i get to know how they think and what their mental attitudes are.

from my results which i analysed and gathered, i am able to see that the the majority of teenagers who answered my survey were favouring the more violent or action games with the reason being that they love the thrill that it gives them and it makes them feel like as if they are on the front line of the war zone themselves.

My interview - My documentary on Crime and teenagers in Banstead

My interview

My interview about crime in Banstead and teenagers.

It talks about the crime rate in Banstead which is committed by teenagers and why that may be.
I set this interview up in my sixth form and asked one of my peers, a teenager who lives in Banstead, to honestly answer a few questions for me highlighting her opinions and any facts she has based on teenagers and crime in Banstead.

Competitor analysis

Comparison with an already existing documentary – Young kids, Hard time - and my own documentary.
Things we do that they don’t
We only focus on a regional outlook on our documentary and the teenagers, whereas Young kids, Hard time focuses on nationally in a broader range.
Things we do better than them?
In my film, I highlight teenagers and focus on their behaviour. This is much easier for me to conduct as I am a teenager myself and know them better than someone who makes a documentary who is 30 plus years old. Unlike in Young kids, hard time they used ideas from adults perception.
Things we do equally well
I equally express the behaviours of teenagers, although in different ways. I also clearly convey the message in which we are trying to project in our documentaries.
Things they do that we don’t
Young kids, Hard time include other factors which feature around teenagers which might influence them to behave in a different way depending on what they are exposed to.
Here is a comparison table that I have conducted to show things that a documentary of my choice does better, what I do better, things we do better and things we do equally as well.

Advertising effectiveness

Advertising effectiveness

what is advertising effectiveness?

Advertising effectiveness pertains to how well a company's advertising accomplishes the intended. Small companies use many different statistics or metrics to measure their advertising effectiveness.

I can use this to help me choose the best distribution method for my interview / documentary and as my target audience is teenager, most of them use online and internet TV, apps on mobiles or tablets or sites which stream movies, series and films such as Netflix and Hay U.

The best way I will want to distribute my film is via YouTube and this way it is available for all the world to see.

readership circulation

Circulation figures

Below is a table which shows the circulation figures in Banstead and the audit period. From this we are able to see how many people are consuming newspapers within this area.

The table below shows which specific newspapers are being consumed in Banstead and the age groups within the area which gives you an indication of whom is purchasing the newspapers and which newspaper they are buying.

The most popular newspaper purchased within Bansetad is the Epsom guardian and i believe that this is the newspaper that teenagers will have the most contact with so that means that this way i can get an idea of the amount of teenagers which would be interested in the Epsom guardian.

audience research

audience classification

Socio economics
I am studying youth crime in Banstead, part of this process is to understand the socio economical background of my audience. Social economics is the social science that studies how economic activity affects and is shaped by social processes. My target audience is 16-18 year olds. This has been influenced by my research that showed me unemployment in this age group in Surrey is 77.9%.  This may be a leading factor in youth crime. Furthermore, they are more likely to have the time to watch my documentary give their free time.

Geodemographic
This is research that combines demographics (what makes you) and psychographics (your personality) and Geographic’s (the area you live in). Geodemographic research combines demographics, this is what makes you. For example, your age or gender. It also has psychographics, this is your personality. Finally the last trait it combines is geographic this is the area you live in. This main audience of my documentary will be the parents of the teenagers in Banstead. Geodemographic research applies to this because the parents will be curious about what their children get up to when they’re not around.

Psychographics
Psychographics are the measurements of your personality. My target audiences psychographics might be that they thing that the children are well behaved and they think this documentary might prove that. Another example is that that have a stereotypical view on teenagers and my documentary might change their view or confirm it.

Ethnographics
This is the word that describes cultures where they live and how they live. This is also to understand their way of life. Ethnographics is the type of research that analyses the culture of which a person comes from. It looks at where they live and how they live also, it is to understand their way of life. This effects my documentary because it is about youth crime in Banstead. For example, a Banstead native may disagree with the crime I am listing because from his generation the crime that used to happen were a lot worse.

Basics
My primary audience are the parents of teenagers in Banstead as they might be curious and interested in what their child is up to when they are not watching what they are doing. There occupation may affect this because some people may work with children and have a completely different view to someone who works in a office and never works with children. My secondary audience are the teenagers their gender may effect this because the crime mostly involve teenage boys.

Media and Product Preferences
This is the things my target audience use as well as the products they prefer to buy. This can be affected by the people they are around. For example, a teenager buys a new phone and shows it to his friend group this will then influence the friend group to buy the phone as they think it is cool to have. This is effective for my documentary because I can spread the word to increase popularity.

Buying Patterns
This is the pattern in which people buy things. For example, someone will buy a new phone if everyone else has it because it will increase their popularity among piers. This is useful for my documentary because I can use these to promote my films.

box office figures

Box Office Figures

After researching into the nearest cinemas to Banstead, I have found that the nearest locations that have cinemas are Epsom and Sutton. According to the Preston Ward Reigate and Banstead Health Needs Assessment 2014, 22% of under 16s live in poverty. In addition to this, the average cinema ticket in the UK has increased by more than 26 percent since 2007. Overall, tickets for a family of four total to £36.40, not including the cost of travel and snack (£50 and over). This suggests that teenagers will be less likely to be able to afford to go to the cinema as it has recently become costly, unless the teenagers themselves have part time employment which I will research further into.

programme ratings

Programme ratings

1. Gathering agencies are companies that collect specific statistics and data. For example, Barb collect statistics for the most viewed television programs in that current week. This is effective because it can show you the most viewed programs of that week which shows how popular that specific program is.

2. Most Popular TV Programs:
- Sherlock (FRI 21:04)
- New Year's Eve (THU 23:59)
- Eastenders (FRI 20:02)
- War and Peace (SUN 21:00)

The main reason I think that Sherlock is at the top of the list is because it was the Christmas special and it showed the return of Sherlock, after his so called death. This is effective because the producers left the series on a cliffhanger this means that the next episode will be extremely popular because the audience want to know what happens next. The main reason that New Years Eve was so popular because it was influenced by the media because it is a free fireworks show. This is effective because it shows how influential the media are and how they influence what people watch on TV.

3. Short films have to be more creative when using data because they are not as popular as main stream programming. For example, agencies such as Barb analyse data through how many views the program got. On the other hand with short film it is very rare that you see them on TV. This is effective because it is hard to analyse the data of short films because they are never on mainstream Chanel. Therefore the solution to this is to use other data to analyse short films. For example, Facebook and YouTube hits. This is effective because it can increase the popularity reported on short films as it is a corrects statistic.

4. Short film directors are interested in RAJAR data because they use the radio to advertise. For example, it is unlikely a shot film will be advertised on TV because it costs to much for the director. Therefore they will appear on a talk show to advertise their show. This is effective because after the show they might use RAJAR to see how popular their talk show is. This could lead to the film getting more views due to how popular his show is.

With Sherlock being the highest viewed programme it linked to my area of research because if families are in at prime time when the show is being aired and watching Sherlock then teenagers must be exposed to it which is another way how they may be exposed to crime and the hunger for danger and bad intentions.

Viability

Viability

Is the product (documentary) financially viable?
No it is not, this is because the average cost for broadcasting and distributing a film/documentary  through television on the BBC is between £20K - £25K. There are a few websites which allows free video streaming such as YouTube but only for a maximum of 15 minutes, if anymore than that you will be charged their own bandwidth price.

Do I have the necessary skills to undertake the production process?
I have basic skills in order to undertake in the production of my documentary through the help and guidance of FiveStar production team. I am able to operate a camera, take shots, edit and other skills which would help me produce my documentary.
I have revised my camera skills and they have made me confident to use the camera and equipment such as the tripod or a boom-pole if needed and i am familiar with the iMovie editing application which is available on Apple Mac's or the use of Avid media editing software which an industry editing software which delivers in the editing area with its advanced applications and effects - i think this would be the best option for my film.

Do you have the right equipment and technology available to you?
I have enough equipment to undertake the production of my film. I have access to cameras, editing software's such as iMovie, AVID editing software which is industry equipment, lighting, microphones, sound recorders, boom poles etc. This enables me to have a successful outcome when I'm producing my film as I have industry equipment to do so.

What help and support will you require?
I will require the help of my teachers, family and friends and year 13 students whom have produced before. I may also be able to conduct some research on my own which will benefit me not only in the production of my documentary but give me new skills to hold.
Those whom i receive help from may show me the best and most effective way to do things and make a successful documentary - this will only really be possible with the support from my friends, piers and family.

Have you got enough time to produce the product?
Yes, i have free periods in which i can produce some work. I have lunches and after schools to do video recording, take shots and to make use of all the equipment that I have. On weekends my most available day is Sunday which means that i can use the day productively where i don't have any interruptions to delay the production of my documentary.

Controlled observation -
I will be leaving the box of chocolates in the sixth form center to observe from a distance. I won’t leave the room but watching the way people react to the box of chocolates which doesn’t have a sign on it, no note, nothing.

I will be observing how many people act upon a box of chocolates left in a room. The question is who will look at it, who will stare, who will touch the chocolates, take one away with them or who will eat it in the spot.
It will be a controlled observation, on how many people are tempted by the chocolates and how they act.
